Sony has announced its long-awaited console, the PS5 Pro, following a number of leaks and speculations. Mark Cerny, during Sony’s "PlayStation 5 Technical Presentation," puts emphasis on the performance of the hardware, saying it is close to "doubling the power of the PS5." The system costs $700 USD and doesn't include a disc drive or a vertical stand, which you have to buy separately. Preorders start on September 26.

Sony promises to deliver smoother frame rates at 60 fps with the following new features in the PS5 Pro console:

  • Upgraded GPU: The new GPU has 67% more Compute Units, 28% faster memory, and encompasses 45% faster rendering capabilities than the PS5.
  • Advanced Ray Tracing: The new ray tracing technology allows for more dynamic reflection and refraction of light, thus rays are cast at double and at times triple the speeds of the current model of PS5.
  • AI-Driven Upscaling: The PlayStation console gets its own brand of AI-driven super-resolution technology, the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. It is more optimized for the console to provide super sharp image clarity and an incredible amount of detail.
  • PS5 Pro Game Boost: The PS5 Pro features PS5 Pro Game Boost, which enhances compatible PS4 games for the PS5 Pro. Over 8,500 games are compatible, with potential improvements in performance and higher resolutions for some PS4 titles.

The new PS5 model, launching on November 7 through PlayStation Direct and various retailers, features a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller, and a copy of Astro's Playroom. It’s described by Cerny as Sony's "most powerful console" ever. While its design is similar to the existing PS5 and maintains the same height, it now includes a racing-stripe-like cutout on the side. Sony seems to have taken the Apple approach, not including any disc drive or vertical stand along with the console’s package, which needs to be bought separately.

However, the timing of the announcement of the PS5 seems very deliberate, especially after the biggest business failure of a single game product in Concord, whose failure story was supposedly attempted to be hidden with the success of their console game Astro Bot.
