The must anticipated esports event, close to all our hearts, Legacy Deciphered : Echoes of Raahib "Animal" Reza, concluded it's grand finale on the 19th of February in the Capital’s Elite Convention Hall situated at Hatirjheel. However, the immense potential of the event has now become questionable after the controversy in the CS2 segment, unprofessionalism from the organizers and dissatisfaction from the finalists. This raises the question, was it really to honor the memory of Raahib Reza? Or was it just a PR stunt? Let's dive deep.
The event Legacy Deciphered: Echoes of Raahib Animal Reza was organised by 1United (Read More about the event here), a fairly new esports organization but sources say many old people of the community are connected with this initiative. As Raahib Reza has been a beloved member of the esports community, it seemed normal as his well wishers would be wanting to do it. The event had CS2 and DOTA2 segments where "The Covenant" and "The Government" played the DOTA2 finals where Covenant ended up wining 2-0.
The CS2 Finals were supposed to be played by Red ViperZ and Cronus Legends however this is where the problems began. RV player, Mantis stated in his Facebook posts that despite it being a BO5 it was suddenly changed to BO3 without their knowledge however even when they agreed to it out of respect for Raahib Reza, due to technical difficulties the matches couldn’t start. So a BO1 was agreed upon but that too didn’t happen hence both teams agreed to become Joint Champions and equally split the 75,000 BDT Prizepool, as also reported by Cronus Legends player Potato. Even though in these cases the LAN is normally rescheduled as seen in many Esports events over the past such as Worlds 2012. But since both teams agreed to a joint Champion without affecting the total prizepool it was also an option. However, organizers supposedly made RV Champion stating that the main goal of the game is to get champion and runners up. If not they should’ve left the event which is not professional on the terms of a TO. Besides, the restriction of usage of own monitors is something that is uncommon in the scene but was notified to them a day prior to the LAN. While sources have said that player were told this was compliance from MSI Bangladesh, we have not been able to verify this as previously MSI has been part of many esports events but there were no restriction on players bringing own monitors. Besides this according to statements from the players of RV, the playing tables were not upto the mark, and the internet connection was bad leading up to 80% packet loss during gunfights.
A rather reply post was made from Facebook Page of Majeistic, regarding the event where he admits to being a part of the organizing panel where he has shared answers to some of the claims made by the CS2 Finalists, however none with strong backing evidence which is a mark of unprofessionalism on their part as these clarifications are supposed to come from the organization. Although he claimed players were notified of the change to BO3 the players have denied the claim with no evidence from both sides. Statements from also verify that a allegation was made to RV for creating a havoc in the event and it was pre-planned and also that too because the distributorship has switched. Since, Red ViperZ is sponsored by MSI as well while the post was made from a rather personal profile it can be considered that there is o proof to back this up. The main issue that remains as found in the official statement from RV is that even though they had agreed for the split and the main shareholder Amit Richard was aware of it, the organizing team overruled and announced them champion.
While the scale of the event and arrangements were decent enough and according to the organizers they did it for free, something that we also have not been able to verify as lots of brands have powered the event. With that in mind the stage and event setup was decent proving the organizers did a great job. But good arrangement and lack of budget are not excuses to give up competitive integrity and proper playing conditions, it rather points to poor planning on the part of organizers. Despite esports growing in our region, such incidents continue to restrict the eagerness of players willing to join competitive gaming making the need more visible, for centralized control over the rules and regulations of esports tournaments.
