According to Variety, James Wan's production company Atomic Monster has picked up the rights to develop a television series based on ‘Pacific Drive’. Said game, an Ironwood Studios title, drops players into an exclusion zone full of surreal dangers, and the only way to survive is literally on wheels. Set in the fictional Olympic Exclusion Zone, Pacific Drive combines survival mechanics with roguelite gameplay, making you scrounge for resources, upgrade your ride, and engage unpredictable anomalies inside a tautly atmospheric landscape that is eerily reminiscent of a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. title.
And since the game’s release in February, Pacific Drive has seen widespread critical praise. It was nominated for Best Debut Indie Game at The Game Awards 2024 and Best Gameplay at the BIG Festival. It also featured on the Nebula Awards' suggested reading list, courtesy of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association.
As for the TV adaptation, Wan will be an executive producer of the series, alongside Atomic Monster's Michael Clear and Rob Hackett and with The Menagerie Productions' Jeff Ludwig. No network or streaming platform has been announced so far. This adaptation is another title that’s materialised on the wings of a continued fad of popular video game titles making their way to the small screen, with its predecessors including recent smash hits like HBO's The Last of Us and Amazon's Fallout. Only time will tell if this adaptation will continue in that vein.
