Tencent Games, British Esports, and Ukie are working together to drive the growth of the esports industry in the UK, in response to increasing interest from Gen Z citizens. Said interest was reflected by recently done studies that showed that 75% of young people support the incorporation of esports into school programs and recognise its potential to open doors to diverse career opportunities. However, as the industry is set to grow significantly, with an estimation of it reaching $304.4 million by 2029, obstacles such as financial challenges, limited awareness of career options, and lingering societal stigma remain to be addressed.
Nonetheless, the UK has begun embracing esports within its education system, with 39 degree programs dedicated to the subject expected to launch next year at separate institutions. With that in mind, industry leaders are emphasising the importance of public-private partnerships to overcome existing challenges and ensure sustainable development. These collaborations can bridge talent gaps by offering training, mentorship, and resources that prepare young people for various roles in the esports ecosystem. And beyond gaming, esports also provides valuable skills in digital innovation, teamwork, and creativity, making it an attractive avenue for future professionals.
Grassroots initiatives like mobile esports tournaments and specialized curricula, such as Pearson’s BTECs in esports, are central to this vision. So, by focusing on infrastructure, education, and equitable access, stakeholders aim to position the UK as a global leader in esports, fostering innovation and preparing the next generation for success in this dynamic field.
