Sea of Thieves is the last Xbox game from Microsoft's first-party studios to be officially confirmed for a new platform. The pirate-themed adventure game from Rare is set to release on PlayStation 5 on April 30.

With Sea of Thieves, there are now four Xbox games that are available on multiple platforms: Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, Pentiment, and Sea of Thieves. The PlayStation 5 version will allow players to play with those on Xbox and PC, thanks to cross-play support. Game director Mike Chapman said in a video announcement that they always wanted to make it easier for players to play together without barriers. With its cross-play support, players from different platforms, including Xbox and PC, can now play together, which has contributed to the game's popularity. The upcoming PlayStation 5 release on April 30 is expected to bring even more players into the game, further expanding its community.

Sea of Thieves has gained a reputation for its cooperative multiplayer gameplay, where players can form crews to sail the seas, battle other pirates, and hunt for treasure. It's also known for its regular updates and seasonal events, which add new content and keep players engaged.

Shelly Preston, the associate design director, mentioned in the same video that this is the first time in nearly 40 years that Rare is releasing a game on PlayStation, which is a big milestone. When it first launched in 2018, Sea of Thieves didn't get much love, but updates and expansions have made it a much better game with a strong community of players. PlayStation 5 players can now enjoy a game with lots of content right from the start.
