After 31 years of service, PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida is now retiring from Sony Interactive Entertainment. In an interview on the official PlayStation Blog, Yoshida announced his last day of work to be January 15, 2025.
“I’ve been with PlayStation from the beginning,” Yoshida shared. “When I hit 30 years, I thought, ‘It may be time to move on.’ The company’s thriving, I love the PS5, and I respect the new leadership. PlayStation is in great hands. It felt like the right time.”
Joining Sony in 1993 as a lead Account Executive, Yoshida was a key member of the original PlayStation team, with his work focusing on securing support from Japanese developers. And over the years, he has held several roles, including but not limited to being president of Worldwide Studios from 2008 to 2019 and leading the Independent Developer Initiative.
Yoshida has also contributed to iconic titles like Gran Turismo, God of War, The Last of Us, Journey, and many more. Reflecting on his career, he cited Journey to be an especially meaningful title, recalling its win at the DICE Awards and the emotional impact it had on players.
Despite retiring, Yoshida has expressed plans to remain connected to the gaming industry. Nonetheless, he will be leaving behind a legacy that has helped shape PlayStation to be the global gaming powerhouse that it is.
