A film adaptation of Outlast is currently in the works with J.T. Petty, who helped write all of the Outlast series and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, taking on the screenplay and horror veteran Roy Lee (Barbarian, It, Late Night with the Devil) being the producer.
Regarding the adaptation, Lee said, “When Outlast launched in 2012, it changed the landscape of horror gaming, setting a new standard for immersion in the genre. Its rich, emergent lore provides the perfect foundation for a film that delves into the psychological and physical horrors at the core of the franchise. I’m excited to bring this unique world to life for both new viewers and longtime fans.”
Red Barrels’ co-founder and creative director David Chateauneuf further added, “As die-hard horror fans, we admire the work of Roy Lee and Lionsgate. Horror films both classic and modern have had an undeniable impact on Outlast, and now, to work on the film adaptation with true horror legends, is a dream, maybe even a nightmare, come true.”
No release date, director, or cast for the film has yet been announced, but this is a major step for the Outlast franchise as it is now reaching for a whole new audience on the big screen.
Outlast isn’t the only indie horror game that has made its way to theatres. In 2018, Slender Man went from internet legend to supernatural thriller, and more recently, Five Nights at Freddy’s achieved such success that a sequel is already in development. Looking ahead, an adaptation of the horror game Iron Lung is also on the way, directed, written, produced, and funded by YouTuber Mark "Markiplier" Fischbach. But for now, fans will have to wait with bated breath for more information on the next step of their favourite franchise.
