What do you think would happen if the best selling game of all time and the biggest streaming service in the world joined forces? We’re about to find out, because an animated Minecraft series is in the works at Netflix.

This announcement comes as a part of Minecraft’s 15th anniversary celebrations. In a short twenty-second-long teaser trailer that took the world by storm, a pixelated green creeper explodes in the middle of the screen to reveal an underground cavern brimming with lava. The scene then zooms in on the red Netflix "N" logo atop a volcanic rock before transitioning to the words "Netflix x Minecraft".

According to a press release, the animated series is set to tell an original story with a fresh cast of characters, painting the ever-beloved world of Minecraft in a new light. It will be CG-animated, with Canadian studio WildBrain at the helm of it all. The studio has previously worked on the popular cartoon series “Johnny Test” and Netflix projects like “Sonic Prime” and “Carmen Sandiego”.

A Minecraft live-action movie backed by Warner Bros. and Legendary is also in the works. It stars a star-studded cast featuring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Emma Myers, among others. The live-action film is set to premiere worldwide in April 2025.
