Rejoice, Yakuza fans! Get ready for Kazuma Kiryu's explosive return as the iconic video game series bursts onto the small screen with a brand new live-action show titled "Like a Dragon: Yakuza." And this isn't just any other video game adaptation; it's a neon-drenched dive into the criminal underbelly of Japan, promising heart-pounding action, complex characters, and the signature Yakuza blend of gritty realism and outrageous humor.

The show is directed by Masaharu Take, and stars Ryoma Takeuchi as Yakuza protagonist Kazuma Kiryu. The adaptation will not adapt any of the existing Yakuza games, and instead will tell an original story that, according to Prime Video’s press release, “games in the past have not been able to explore.”

The story kicks off in a way that aims to capture your attention just like the video game series. The show will open in modern-day Tokyo, a bustling metropolis teeming with life. But beneath the glittering facade lurks the shadowy world of the Yakuza, where loyalty, honor, and violence are intricately intertwined. Enter Kazuma Kiryu, a legendary Yakuza enforcer who vanished from the scene years ago. Now, a mysterious event pulls him back into the criminal underworld, forcing him to confront his past and the choices that forever altered his life.

And as the story unfolds across two timelines, the show will delve deeper into Kiryu's journey. We’ll see him as a young, hotheaded Yakuza rising through the ranks, experiencing the brutal code of the Yakuza firsthand. The show will then jump forward in time, and we’ll witness a hardened Kiryu grappling with the consequences of his past and the weight of his decisions.

Premiering on October 25th, 2024, on Amazon Prime Video, it seems "Like a Dragon: Yakuza" is poised to be a must-watch for fans of the games and newcomers alike.
