Towards the end of 2021, Ubisoft hopped onto the NFT train and launched “Ubisoft Quartz,” an initiative aimed to integrate these digital tokens into games by turning in-game cosmetics into collectible NFTs. In the three years that have passed since then, the only game to get the Quartz treatment was Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint on PC. Now, the company has announced a brand new partnership with Double Jump.Tokyo to further push NFTs into the gaming market.

Through this collaboration, the Japanese developers will provide Web3 technologies and relevant support to see the release of Ubisoft’s first blockchain-based title, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles. It is slated to be a competitive multiplayer turn-based RPG which is still awaiting a release date. A fixed timeline for the blockchain integration is also yet to be provided by either company.

The future impact of this partnership on Ubisoft Quartz remains muddied, although Ubisoft maintained in a late 2023 statement to PC Gamer that Quartz still exists as an "underlying infrastructure". It would also seem that they are maintaining their firm stance that players simply "don't get" NFTs.

Ubisoft has previously promoted Web3 technologies as a way to enhance gaming by enabling the ownership, trading, and control of in-game assets through NFTs and other blockchain solutions. Meanwhile, most of the online gaming has largely remained unimpressed toward the concept, treating it with levity.
