The Asian Chess Federation (ACF) has officially announced its new initiative, ‘Echess,' aimed at integrating the chess community with Esports. This initiative, set to start in October 2024, marks a huge shift in how chess is played and perceived, particularly among younger audiences.

The ‘Echess' initiative will feature a series of official tournaments and educational events designed to promote chess through digital platforms. By using the popularity of esports, the ACF aims to bring in a new generation of players who are increasingly more engaged with online gaming environments. The initiative is expected to include live-streamed competitions, interactive online training sessions, and community-building activities that utilise various digital tools.

It also aims to significantly increase participation in chess by making the game more accessible and appealing through online formats. ‘Echess' places a strong emphasis on community engagement as well. By creating an online platform where players can connect, compete, and share strategies, the ACF seeks to foster a sense of belonging among chess enthusiasts.

In Bangladesh, specifically, Esports events for chess have happened twice in the past. The Chess Esports Championship by Arekta Gaming in early 2024 for students marked a positive foray into the digital realm of chess for young students. Meanwhile, the JCI eChess Championship also took place earlier this year, courtesy of JCI Dhaka North, JCI Dhaka Urban, JCI Dhaka United, JCI Dhaka Aspire, JCI Dhaka Ace, JCI Dhaka Eminent, and Zenetic Esports. However, it is worth noting that neither of these events were available to the general public, as the former was for students only while the latter was exclusively open to JCI Bangladesh Paid Chapter Members of 2024.

The 'Echess' initiative is not just about playing chess; it's about reimagining how the game can be experienced in an era dominated by technology. With this bold step forward, the Asian Chess Federation is poised to redefine the landscape of chess in Asia and beyond, making it more inclusive and engaging for all.
