The next mainline Resident Evil game is in development, game director Koshi Nakanishi confirmed in a video streamed by Capcom.

"It was really difficult to figure out what to do after Resident Evil 7," the director said. "But I found it, and to be honest, it feels substantial." Nakanishi further explained that he wouldn’t be able to share any further details, but can't wait to shed more light on the upcoming project “when the time is right”.

Nakanishi was the director of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Resident Evil: Revelations, and Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. He also served as a designer on Resident Evil 5. In more ways than one, he has succeeded in revitalising the franchise and steering it back toward its horror roots.

2017’s Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was a major shift for the franchise, veering into first-person territory and introducing a new playable protagonist, Ethan Winters. Its successor, Resident Evil: Village, released in 2021, is supposed to be the final bow out for the Winters family saga. As such, it will be interesting to see if the upcoming project will be named Resident Evil 9 or if Capcom uses a clever subtitle, like it did with the logo for Resident Evil Village, and if the game features a brand new hero.
