Grand Theft Hamlet, a new documentary filmed entirely within Grand Theft Auto V, is releasing globally soon. Directed by Sam Crane and Pinny Grylls, the unique film follows two actors struggling through the COVID-19 pandemic as they attempt to stage a retelling of Shakespeare's Hamlet inside the virtual world of Los Santos.

Shot using only GTA’s in-game phone camera, the 89-minute film captures moments of chaos, reflection, and surprising beauty, blending Shakespearean drama with the gritty, unpredictable energy of GTA Online. After winning the SXSW documentary competition and receiving critical acclaim throughout its festival run, Grand Theft Hamlet will premiere on the Mubi streaming platform and in theatres in early 2025.

The story begins in January 2021, during the UK’s third lockdown, as actors Sam and Mark find themselves isolated and uncertain about the future. In desperation, they immerse themselves in the violent yet mesmerising world of GTA Online. One day, they stumble across a theatre inside the game and hatch an idea: “Why not stage Hamlet here?”

Described by the filmmakers as “groundbreaking,” the documentary explores the evolving role of virtual spaces and asks whether ancient stories still resonate in digital worlds. With its cinematic use of in-game visuals, capturing everything from serene wildflower meadows to chaotic cityscapes, it offers a unique blend of art, storytelling, and escapism.

The U.K. premiere will take place on October 15, with another screening on October 20.
