SEGA's 1993 arcade-style fighting game, Eternal Champions, is reportedly in the works to receive an adaptation on the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Derek Connolly, who previously worked on Jurassic World Dominion and Kong Skull Island has been invited to write a script for the adaptation, which is to be produced by Skydance Media.

Released for SEGA GENESIS, Eternal Champions was one of the first few fighting games to be released on home consoles first, and not a arcade-to-console.

The game's plot revolves around an omniscient being known as The Eternal Champion. He predicts that the world is going to end soon due to some untimely deaths of important figures throughout history who were destined for greatness. In order to restore balance in the world, the Eternal Champion gathers these figures from different points of time moments before their death to fight in a tournament. The victors will be able to change the courses of their lives and restore balance to the world, whilst the losers will be forced to live out their lives to death just as history intended.

It's a very odd movie to adapt to the screen for various reasons, such as weak source material and fading brand recognition. But it does have a very fun premise, which counts for a lot. We have unlikely characters from different points of time gathered by a god called the Eternal Champion who gives them a chance to fight for a second shot at life and change the course of history.

The success of the Mortal Kombat and Mario Bros. movie has shown that there's a market for video game adaptations. If handled well, Eternal Champions has the potential to be a cult classic, appealing to both longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise.
