Ah, good old October. The month of frights, horror and indulgence into all things creepy, whether it be a book, movie or, most importantly, video games. And this October, we have five titles that’ll help you do just that and more. So grab yourselves a blanket, turn off the lights and prepare yourselves for 5 spine-tingling, blood-pumping experiences.
1. It Steals
In this game, you’ll find yourself trapped in a dimly lit maze armed with only a flashlight as you’re tasked to find a certain amount of glowing orbs as a monster tries to hunt you down . That’s a pretty simple premise, isn’t it? After all, you’ll just hide when the monster is near and wait for it to go away. Well, fear a lot, because the kicker here is the monster is the one that’ll be hiding from you. It really doesn’t like the light of your torch so it will always be sticking to the shadows, just at the edge of your flashlight. Watching you and waiting for the perfect time to pounce on you. Now, take all that delicious potential dread and add a retro low-poly art style with an immersive ambience, and you’ll find something that stands higher than most horror games out this season. You’ll be kept on your toes for the entirety of its playthrough as the monster uses new tricks and tactics to catch you throughout your progress. And if all that doesn’t convince you, the fact that it’s made by the same people behind Lethal Company means it will at the very least be quality for sure.
2. The Upturned
Another banger from the folks behind Lethal Company(they really don’t miss huh), this game explores the near anomalous niche of horror comedy. The movement , the dialogue and basically everything else in this game is entertainingly wacky. But that doesn’t mean that it isn’t scary. Admittedly, it is relatively the least scariest game in this list. But it still has its moments. In this title, you’ll be using the amazingly wonky physics mechanics to grab and chuck props around the map to fend off enemies and do platforming as you try to advance from one floor to another while solving various puzzles in a scrumptiously liminal hotel. A definite recommend if you’re looking for something fresh and fun.
3. From The Darkness
For many people, this one is considered the spiritual successor of the legendary P.T. and it's pretty apparent why just from the get go. It does wonderful work in setting up a very immersive atmosphere. You start the game going to an old Soviet era apartment that belonged to your grandfather in order to find a photo album. But upon reaching the apartment it becomes clear that something is not right. The apartment feels extremely claustrophobic and eerie for starters. You have to do various lock and key puzzles to progress the game and as you progress, certain anomalies begin to happen. Someone starts turning off the lights, doors begin to open and close on their own and so, so much more. The game makes excellent use of its bag of tricks to keep everything tense and mysterious. And the sound and level design is truly something else. Overall, this title is a perfect choice for those who enjoy psychological horror and want to experience a bone-chilling adventure.
4. Visage
This one is a truly unsettling experience for the ol’ psyche. In this game, you're in a decaying haunted house. Except, the house knows you’re in it and it has opinions about that. It morphs itself in twistingly wondrous forms just to hinder your progress, making you wander through eerie corridors, dimly lit rooms, and grotesque manifestations of the house's dark past. This game sets itself apart by choosing to forego frequent jumpscares and take a more slow-burn approach as it builds up tension and dread. Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s completely devoid of encounters that’ll make you pale and flinch. It's just that those instances are nothing compared to just the sheer atmosphere, which provides a truly unsettling experience for those who dare to delve into the house and its depths.
5. Endoparasitic
Imagine, you’re in a research station located on the moon, doing scientist things and being on the moon. Suddenly, a horrible parasite outbreak has just occurred and in the resulting chaos, some monstrous critters had a presumably very fun time chomping on all of your limbs except for just one arm. And now, you must crawl and fight your way through these beasts that have infested your station using only that one arm. In the wide spectrum of stuff that induce chills and shudders, this one isn’t that great. But the game’s mechanic of making you use only one arm for everything makes it a very unique experience that warrants it to be deserving of a try.
